WHEELING- Once cold weather begins to creep into the picture, golf season prepares for its final stretch.

And for Greenbrier East, their preparation ended with a highly successful conclusion.

The Spartans golf team capped a brilliant 2024 season with a seventh-place finish in the highly competitive Class AAA state tournament on Oct. 8 and 9 at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.

East finished with a +93 for the tourney and Isaac Hutchison tied for third place overall individually with a score of 156 for a +14. Hutchison had a total of five birdies and in the future, we may all read about him succeeding at the highest of levels in the sport.

“I’m very happy with finishing in the third spot at the State tournament, Hutchison said.

“I absolutely could have placed better, and I had a couple bad holes which prevented that, but that’s just golf. I can’t ask for much of a better ending to my sophomore season. It feels great that all the work I have put in this season has finally paid off in a big way,” he added.

The other individual scores for the Spartans were Nate Dolin (+32, tie-27th), Issac Cantrell (+50, 34th), and Seth Napier (+53, 35th).

“I can’t thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ enough, as I wouldn’t be here without his gifts and guidance. I also prepare before my matches with the mindset of just having fun, and the team concept of high school golf really helps that. I get to talk to my teammates and laugh and enjoy myself without having to worry about the stress of scoring well or even winning, and I think that concept has really helped me the past couple days,” Hutchison said.

Even though this season is now officially wrapped up, Hutchison will return next year and will look to make his junior season even better.

” I performed really well at the state tournament this year. Even though the scores don’t show the best, this is by far the hardest course we play and I think I managed it very well this week. I made lots of improvements since last year and I hope to do the same for the next so the grind to get better never stops,” the sophomore standout stated.

Coach Jemel Samuels and his 2025 Spartan golf team will hit the greens next August 2025.
