A 43-year-old Haysville man surrendered to law enforcement after an hours-long standoff in which he allegedly shot at deputies serving an arrest warrant at his home Wednesday.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail at 3:08 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, jail inmate records show.

A team of six deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office were serving the warrant at 1:20 p.m. at the man’s home in the 8100 block of South Bernice in Haysville. The warrant was for failing to appear and contempt of court stemming from an incident in which the man was accused of threatening to shoot bail bondsmen as they tried to arrest him.

Deputies interviewed neighbors and learned the man was alone in the home, WPD chief Joe Sullivan said Thursday at a news conference.

They requested a K-9 from the Haysville police to figure out which room the man was in. They discovered he was locked in a bedroom.

At 3:48 p.m., three deputies broke a bedroom window and prepared to toss chemical munitions inside.

The man allegedly fired multiple times at the deputies, according to a WPD news release.

Two deputies returned fire; one shot three rounds and the other fired five rounds. No one was injured in the shootout, Sullivan said.

The SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called at 4:03 p.m. and reached the man by phone at 4:41 p.m.

“Throughout the ensuing seven-hour negotiation, [the suspect] made multiple statements that this was his ‘last stand’ and that he would shoot at officers if they made entry into the home,” according to the WPD news release.

At 9:01 p.m., chemical munitions were tossed inside the home and SWAT officers heard gunshots. While another round of chemical munitions was being prepared, the man came out of the home and surrendered at 11:33 p.m.

Wichita police are investigating the incident, since it involved Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges will be filed.
