    If you’re currently on the market for a new gig, knowing where to search for a job can be a daunting task — but there’s one website that you might not have thought of checking out.

    If working for the state is of interest to you, Kansas’ job portal currently has 512 job openings posted for jobs across Kansas . If you want to get county-specific, Shawnee (home to Topeka) has the most job openings posted (189) followed by Pawnee (32) and Miami (29).

    Sedgwick County currently has 25 jobs posted.

    Here’s a quick look at five job openings located in the Wichita area that pay more than $40,000 a year.

    Highway maintenance superintendent

    Agency: Department of Transportation

    Salary: $69,784-$71,593 annually

    Qualifications: Must have at least four years of experience in highway bridge construction or maintenance with two years of experience in supervising. Education can be substituted for experience.

    Description: This position is responsible for overseeing various highway repairs as well as preparing highway snow removal plans, providing advice for the permit program, performing work inspections and more.

    Litigation counsel

    Agency: Corporation Commission

    Salary: $65,000-$75,000

    Qualifications: Must have a law degree and proper up-to-date licensing.

    Description: This person will be responsible for advising the Corporation Commission’s technical staff regarding oil and gas industry regulations. Other responsibilities include preparing testimony, motions, briefs and pleadings, as well as providing representation in both pre-hearings and hearings.

    Public health specialist/nurse

    Agency: Department of Health and Environment

    Salary: $50,000-$60,000

    Qualifications: Must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health or related field and a license to practice nursing if applying for the nurse position.

    Description: This person will provide technical support to various local health departments, prepare orientation materials for administrators, coordinate various communication, conduct outreach and more.

    Assistant public defender

    Agency: State Board of Indigents Defense Services

    Salary: $62,500

    Qualifications: Must have a degree from an accredited law school and be a licensed attorney.

    Description: This person will represent adults who are charged with criminal felonies and cannot afford an attorney. This position is for entry-level attorneys.

    Staff development specialist

    Agency: Department for Children and Families

    Salary: $46,092

    Qualifications: Must have two years of experience in a job developing materials for training and presentations.

    Description: This position will develop and deliver training material for trainees, community partners and staff.

    Wow, such low pay for jobs with high responsibility. It's no wonder Kansas government is so inefficient and ineffective.
