A 38-year-old Kansas man died after a semi-truck rear-ended a farming tractor Monday in northern Kansas.

Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show Andrew Pumphrey, of Mankato, died at the scene of the crash.

The crash was reported at 9:27 p.m. along U.S. Highway 36 just west of the city of Scandia, in Republic County. Pumphrey was heading west on U.S. 36 in a farming tractor that was towing agricultural equipment.

A semi heading west on U.S. 36 for unknown reasons rear-ended the farming tractor. The tractor entered a ditch and Pumphrey was thrown out of it, according to the KHP report.

Pumphrey died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the semi, a 62-year-old Kansas man, had suspected minor injuries. His passenger, a 46-year-old Kansas woman, was taken to the Republic County Hospital with suspected serious injuries, the crash log said.

Republic County is about 158 miles north of Wichita and has a population of 4,642.

farm equipment moving slower than a bicycle at night on a darkened highway is a recipe for disaster. they should move onto the shoulder or off road when vehicles approach as a defensive maneuver, farm equipment is not well lighted making them hard to see
