The new QuikTrip rewards start in Wichita today; here’s what you need to know

As QuikTrip continues to roll out its latest rewards program in the 18 states where the Tulsa-based company operates, it’s now Wichita’s turn.

For years, lots of Wichitans have used QuikTrip rewards cards to swipe for gasoline and in-store purchases to build points for future fuel savings.

It was a test program that never extended beyond Wichita.

Now, QuikTrip is about halfway through rolling out a new rewards plan via the QuikTrip app. The old cards are now obsolete in Wichita.

Note: If you have reward points on your existing card, they will be good for a year — until Sept. 30, 2025 — so don’t throw them away just yet.

“Now, we’re changing that to something totally different,” said QuikTrip spokeswoman Aisha Jefferson-Smith. “Now, it’s every time you go you’re going to get the rewards instantly.”

Instead of QuikTrip rewards, it’s called QT Pay.

That means instead of building up points over time, customers will be able to access savings immediately by paying through the QuikTrip app if they’ve added their checking account to it.

First, for everyone who downloads the QuikTrip app and then scans it via a QR code at the pumps, there will be an immediate 25 cents off each gallon of gas for the first 90 days.

Unlike the old rewards cards, which allowed only 20 gallons to be eligible for savings at a time, there are unlimited gallons with QT Pay.

After the 90-day introductory period, there will 5 cents off each gallon if customers scan the QR code from their phones.

In QuikTrip stores, customers can receive an automatic 5% off most purchases if they allow cashiers to scan the apps on their phones.

There are some exceptions, such as alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets.

“It’s an easy deal,” Jefferson-Smith said.

Yet it’s more complicated than the old cards were.

“Yeah, it could be frustrating to some,” Jefferson-Smith said. “That’s the way we’re moving in the world.”

Customers have to tie their checking accounts to the QuikTrip app, which also may be a sticking point for some.

“Most of our customers seem happy . . . but you do have some that are sensitive around checking account access.”

Jefferson-Smith said QuikTrip doesn’t retain customers’ checking account information, but a third-party financial company called Plaid does.

The previous reward cards didn’t have customer data on them.

Since the new system does, doesn’t that mean that opens up customers to a potential data breach?

“Not for us,” Jefferson-Smith said. “We don’t foresee that happening with using the Plaid system.”

She said Plaid has never had a data breach.

According to Yahoo! Finance, however, Plaid faced a class action lawsuit that alleged customers’ data privacy had been violated. Plaid settled the case in 2021.

For customers who choose to enroll, they can follow the necessary steps at www.quiktrip.com/qt-pay . There’s one button to download the app and another that explains how to enroll.

Plaid has about 12,000 financial institutions in its system. If yours isn’t one of them, the enrollment process may take a day or two longer. Also, if you choose to manually enter your banking information instead of using automation through Plaid, it could take longer.

The QT Pay program works only with checking accounts, not credit cards.

Jefferson-Smith said anyone with questions or concerns about QT Pay can call 844-798-0650 .

“We’ll definitely walk them through it.
