West-side restaurant is about to close. Another restaurant will move in shortly after.

Hurricane Sports Grill at 8641 W. 13th St. is closing at the end of the month: The lease on the space was up, said owner Luis Lopez, and his landlords wanted to raise his rent.

He wasn’t interested.

But the space at Tyler Pointe , the colorful strip center on the corner of 13th and Tyler, won’t be empty for long. After Hurricane Sports Grill moves out at the end of the month, Chris Tincher will take it over for his Old Town Square restaurant Todd Brian’s Brick Street Café & Tavern , which he plans to rebrand and expand in the coming months.

Last week, Tincher announced his plans to leave Old Town Square at the end of October and reinvent his 12-year-old Cajun-inspired restaurant on the west side. At the time, he wasn’t ready to share where he was moving: He wanted to give Hurricane Sports Grill’s owners a chance to announce their news first.

But now, he’s confirming it.

Lopez, meanwhile, says that he had a good run with Hurricane Sports Grill, a chain restaurant that he took over in the fall of 2019. The beach-themed sports bar originally opened with different owners in late 2017 .

Though he’s frustrated about the situation with the space, Lopez said it’s probably all for the best. Between paying percentages of his profits to the Hurricane Sports Grill chain and paying his landlords, he wasn’t making much money at the restaurant.

“It makes no sense for us to continually take care of the west side for very little profit,” he said. “We came to the conclusion it was better to exit.”

In a post shared on Hurricane’s Facebook page on Thursday morning, authored by Lopez’s daughter Erica Case, customers were encouraged to “stop by and show us some LOVE before Hurricane Occidental - Wipes us out!”

Chad Stafford, president of Occidental Management, said on Thursday that Lopez’s assertion “is not correct. However, we are very excited to welcome Chris Tincher’s restaurant to Tyler Pointe. They will be a great fit for the development.”

Lopez said he’ll now turn his attention to his other businesses: Emerson Biggin’s at 808 E. Douglas, which first opened in 1999, and to his catering business, EB Catering. He’s also making plans for a new restaurant in Park City. When Ray Baty first announced his plans in early 2023 to open a new 32-lane bowling complex at Estancia Plaza, K-96 and Ridge Road, he also shared that Lopez was on board to open a restaurant in the complex.

Recently, though, Baty told The Eagle that he’s opening the project in the new Champtown development in Park City instead. Lopez said he’s still a part of the project, and his next restaurant will open in Park City along with Baty’s bowling complex. That’s still a year and a half away, though, Lopez said.

Until that project ramps up, Lopez and his wife plan to enjoy a little downtime filled with travel and spending time with their grandchildren, he said.

“I need to take some time off and enjoy life a little bit.”

Lopez said Hurricane Sports Grill will probably close sometime during the third week of October. Before then, he plans to throw a goodbye party designed to thank the restaurant’s loyal customers. He’ll announce plans for the party on social media, he said.

Meanwhile, Todd Brian’s Tincher is ramping up his work.

He plans to rebrand and rename Todd Brian’s when it moves, though he’s not ready to share all the details of his vision for the new business just yet. On Thursday, he said he’s excited about the space at Tyler Pointe and that he’ll definitely keep its attractive front patio, which includes an outdoor fireplace.

Tincher hopes to have the restaurant moved and reopened by December or January. He’s also looking for someone interested in an “asset purchase agreement” for his space in Old Town, meaning they’d take over the lease for the Todd Brian’s space and buy its equipment.
