AHOSKIE — The Community Christian School baseball team shooky off pesky host Ahoskie Christian to claim an 8-6 victory in the final regular-season game Friday.

Sophomore Tyler Spivey worked six innings on the mound to get the victory, which gave CCS a 6-5 overall mark and 5-3 in Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association 2-A North play. The MACAA playoffs will start next week.

Spivey gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits while striking out eight for the Cyclones, who fell behind 4-3 after two innings. Sophomore Colby Barnhill pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. He fanned one and gave up one hit.

Barnhill, senior Matthew Jackson and freshman Jack Beamon led the Cyclones’ 10-hit attack with two hits each. Jackson tripled while Beamon doubled and drove in a run. Spivey was 1 for 4 and scored twice while Luke Holloman tripled. Barnhill and Nathan Baker added RBIs

Warriors fall short at West Johnston

BENSON — A four-run first inning by host West Johnston was too much for the Hunt High varsity baseball team to overcome Friday in a 4-3 3-A Quad County Conference loss.

Wildcats starting pitcher Kolby Jarman allowed just one earned run among the three he gave up over six innings. Jarman permitted three hits and walked three while striking out 10 but his biggest moment came in the bottom of the first inning. After a two-out error left two Wildcats on base, Jarman drilled a 3-2 pitch from Hunt starter Trevor Moore over the right-center field wall for a 4-0 West Johnston lead.

Hunt (12-7, 7-5 QCC) got one back in the bottom of the first when lead-off batter Jake Harris singled and eventually scored on Seth Evans’ sacrifice fly. The Warriors got an unearned run in the second before Connor Radford scored in the fourth. He singled with two out and raced home on Will Doll’s single to right.

Hunt put runners on third base each of the last two innings but couldn’t score.

Moore took the tough loss after giving up just one earned run on seven hits and two walks.

The Wildcats moved on with a 15-4 overall record and 11-1 and still atop the QCC standings.

Hunt wraps up the regular season next week, visiting archrival Fike on Tuesday and hosting the Golden Demons on Friday.

    Chargers crunch Hilltop Christian

FUQUAY-VARINA — A steady onslaught of runs led to a 15-2 five-inning victory for the Wilson Christian varsity baseball team in an NCCSA 2-A East Region game Friday at Hilltop Christian.

The visiting Chargers, now 10-8 overall, rose to 7-1 in region games as they utilized 12 walks by Hilltop Christian pitchers to go with seven hits and seven stolen bases to score 15 runs for the second straight game.

Shortstop Charlie Scott was 3 for 4 with four runs scored and an RBI while second baseman Mack Wiggins was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Parker Bunn went 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Austin Coughlin singled in a run and scored.

Starting pitcher Ethan Kriger worked two innings for the win while Wiggins and Bunn also got work on the mound.

Wilson Christian will host Wilmington Christian on Tuesday.

    TRACK AND FIELD

    PRs keep tumbling for Chargers

CARY — Personal records continue to fall for members of the Wilson Christian track team as the Chargers competed against a bevy of high-end public and private school runners in the Cary Academy Elite Sprint and Distance meet Friday.

Sophomore Connor Ford set a new personal benchmark as he finished 10th overall in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 4.86 seconds.

Senior Lin Scott pushed his PR and school-record time in the 1,600 run to 4:24.08 as he finished seventh out of 44 runners. Classmate Brett Walston also hit a PR time in the 1,600 as he crossed the finish line in 4:26.52 in 14th place.

Ford also ran the 1,600, finishing in 4:56.92 while Peyton Mitchell (1:05.9) and Cameron Ricks (1:07.45) ran the 400. Mitchell also competed in the 100 dash, finishing in 13.85.

    GIRLS SOCCER

Cyclones wear down Trinity for perfect MACAA finish

GREENVILLE — Abril Ventura scored three goals and Haley Brown knocked in a pair for Community Christian, which took a 5-2 victory Friday at Trinity Christian to conclude Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association regular-season play unbeaten in nine games.

The Cyclones, 11-4 overall, won the MACAA 2-A North Division and will take on South No. 4 seed Gramercy Christian in the first round at home Monday, April 29.

Brown had the assist on Ventura’s first goal midway the first half while Autumn Bradshaw had the helper on Ventura’s next score, coming a minute before halftime for a 2-0 CCS lead.

The Tigers (6-4-2, 6-2-2 MACAA) scored off a corner kick two minutes into the second half but Brown got that goal back two minutes later with an unassisted strike.

Trinity crept within a goal again at the 62nd minute before Bradshaw picked up her second assist, finding Brown for the 4-2 lead.

With six minutes to go, Ventura slammed in the rebound of Brown’s shot for her hat trick.

Now the Cyclones can look forward to seeing Gramercy (5-6-1) again after losing to the Warriors in the MACAA semifinals last spring. CCS beat Gramercy 4-2 in Wilson earlier this season.

“But as I told the girls post-game, it’s anyone’s game,” said CCS head coach Carl Bradshaw. “Come playoffs, it doesn’t matter what the scores were in the regular season, it’s about who comes ready to play. We know it will be a tough game.”

    Lady Chargers blank Hilltop

FUQUAY-VARINA — Wilson Christian grabbed at least a share of first place in the NCCSA 2-A East Region varsity girls race with a 3-0 win Friday evening at Hilltop Christian.
The victory left the defending NCCSA 2-A champion Lady Chargers 9-5-1 overall and 7-1 and knotted with Southside Christian for first place in District 3. Wilson Christian will wrap up the regular season at home Tuesday, April 30, against region foe Wilmington Christian.

Goalkeeper Melia Hughes had eight saves in posting Wilson Christian’s fifth shutout win this season.

Junior Bri Little scored in the 19th minutes and the Lady Chargers led 1-0 at the half. Freshman Maddie Reynell connected on a pair of goals in the second half.

Hilltop Christian exited 4-6 in all matches and 3-4 in region games.
