With second-place in the 3-A Quad County Conference at stake and a sure spot in the upcoming NCHSAA 3-A girls soccer playoffs, Fike High dealt a little revenge to C.B. Aycock in a make-up game Wednesday evening on the Golden Demons’ pitch.

Fike, which lost 2-0 at Aycock on April 22, finished the regular season 17-3-1 overall and 11-3 in Quad County play. The Demons will take the league’s No. 2 seed and, with a current MaxPreps.com ranking of No. 5 in the NCHSAA 3-A East, should get a home game in the playoffs when the brackets come out Friday, May 10.

The Golden Falcons (15-5, 10-4 QCC), meanwhile, fell into a tie with West Johnston for third place and the final guaranteed playoff berth from the eight-team conference.

Fike was frustrated not only in losing the first time to CBA but the rematch twice having to be rescheduled because of the threat of weather.

“A lot to play for tonight with conference position and playoff seeding at stake,” said Fike head coach Chris Mizelle. “The first 10 minutes of the match were the most energetic we may have seen all year and really helped set the tone for the game.”

It only took the Demons three minutes to take the lead. Senior center midfielder Erin Pope threaded a long through ball to junior striker Karys Wheeler for a 1-on-1 with CBA goalkeeper Averi Cornutt, who didn’t stop it.

Eight minutes later, Pope and Wheeler hooked up again, this time on a corner kick with Pope serving and Wheeler heading it into the goal.

However, the 2-0 lead held until the 62nd minute when the Falcons got an own goal when a shot by Fike’s Allerie Pitt was saved by Cornutt but the rebound struck a CBA player and cross the goal line for the final 3-0 margin.

Senior keeper Ainsley Cato presided over Fike’s 13th shutout win.

“Aycock has had a great season and gave us two tough matches,” Mizelle said. “I thought we caused a lot of issues for them tonight and managed the game very well. A few better decisions in different areas for us make have put the game out of reach a bit earlier.”

Fike can now look forward to the postseason and another run perhaps deeper than last season when the Demons fell to archrival Hunt in the third round.

“It’s been a marathon of a season and certainly pleased to wrap up the regular season with a good performance and result,” Mizelle said. “If there’s a time to play at your best, it’s right now and hopefully tonight’s performance carries into the next couple weeks.”
