HAMPTON, Va. — After a successful start to the summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League season Thursday night at friendly Fleming Stadium, the Wilson Tobs returned home Friday with a 2-0 record after rallying to beat the Peninsula Pilots 10-5 at War Memorial Stadium.

The Tobs trailed 5-1 after the Pilots (0-2) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. However, Wilson sent six runners across home plate in the seventh and the bullpen held Peninsula scoreless the last six innings.

The Tobs got an RBI single from center fielder Mackenzie Wainwright in the top of the third inning but didn’t get a hit or put a runner on base over the next three innings. That changed when first baseman Chance Purvis led off the seventh with a single off new Peninsula reliever Dylan Morrill. Catcher Andrew Horvath rapped a one-single before left fielder Kaden Sigmon and shortstop Kasten Harvey drew consecutive walks, the latter forcing in a run.

Right fielder Dawerlyn Amancio reached on an error by Pilots third baseman Chris Martinez that brought in another run and left the bases loaded. Cole Robinson, who homered in Thursday’s debut, unloaded the bags wwith a three-run double to give Wilson the lead.

After a wild pitch moved him to third base, Robinson trotted home on former Southern Nash High star A.J. Jones’ single to left field the sixth run of the inning.

Wilson tacked on three more runs in the ninth on a double by Wainwright and RBI singles from Jones and third baseman Gerret Taylor.

Jones, Wainwright and Purvis each had two of Wilson’s 10 hits and an RBI apiece while Horvath was 2 for 5 with a run scored.

Left fielder Henry Garcia was 3 for 4 with an RBI as the Pilots managed just five hits.

Pitching statistics on the game were incomplete but Gavin Schmitt, Hunter Dyck and Brandon Warren each were credited with a shutout inning in what was a solid showing for the Wilson bullpen.

The Tobs will head south of the border Saturday to face the Florence Flamingos at Carolina Bank Field before starting a home-and-home with new CPL team, the Greenville Yard Gnomes, beginning with a game Monday evening at Guy Smith Stadium before reverting to Fleming on Tuesday evening.
