    Wainwright slugs 3 HRs as Tobs cut Yard Gnomes down to size

    GREENVILLE — The Wilson Tobs’ first-ever foray to Greenville proved successful on a beautiful Memorial Day evening with a 9-4 defeat of the Yard Gnomes, the newest entry into the summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League.

    Tobs left fielder Mackenzie Wainwright slugged three home runs, part of a 12-hit parade at cozy Guy Smith Stadium, as Wilson climbed to 3-1 in the first meeting with its new nearby rival. The Yard Gnomes (1-4) will visit Fleming Stadium for the first time in a rematch Tuesday.

    Tobs starting pitcher Jonah Milchuk allowed just three hits in five shutout innings to get the win. He walked one and struck out three. Wainwright belted solo homers in the second and fourth innings to stake Wilson to a 2-0 lead.

    The Tobs tagged Greenville starter Preston Chaudoin for four more earned runs in the fifth. Third baseman A.J. Jones and right fielder Dawerlyn Amancio each rapped a run-scoring singles before Wainwright socked his third round-tripper of the evening, this time bringing home Amancio as well.

    Amancio singled in Jones to put Wilson up 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth before the Yard Gnomes cracked Wilson reliever Thomas Santana for two runs in the bottom of the frame.

    Each team added two runs in the eighth inning.

    Wainwright finished up 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Tobs while Amancio and Mike Kelly each went 2 for 5. Amancio drove in two runs. Kasten Harvey was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

    Jack Herring was 4 for 4 with two doubles and a homer to lead the Yard Gnomes, who had nine hits and two errors. Joey Siervo was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
