Help coming within 5 years for busy intersection

The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to make improvements on N.C. 58 (Nash Street) where it intersects with Airport Road and Lake Wilson Road.

Andrew Barksdale, public relations officer with the NCDOT, said Wednesday that the improvements will include added and lengthened turning lanes.

Project No. U-6111 has an estimated cost of $700,000 Barksdale said.

“It has not been designed yet, so I don’t have any further details or a project map,” Barksdale said in an email.

Crews from GEL Solutions have been working at and near the intersection this week surveying the roadway and mapping sub-surface features in connection with the project.

“Those are crews contracted by NCDOT doing surveying work there before we start the design process later this year,” Barksdale said.

The scope of the project on N.C. 58 is from Peppermill Drive to Newton Avenue, on Airport Road to Bell Street and on Lake Wilson Road to Townes Court.

“We’ll likely need to acquire some additional land around this intersection but not enough to demolish or take any businesses — just some additional right of way,” Barksdale said.

This project will also include improvements or upgrades to the existing traffic signal at the intersection, Barksdale said.

Initial work will begin in 2027. The project will be awarded for construction in 2029.

According to average annual daily traffic data gathered by the NCDOT, in 2023, eastbound traffic at this intersection on Airport Road was 10,600 vehicles daily and is forecast to be 13,300 by the year 2050. Each day in 2023, approximately 23,700 vehicles headed north on N.C. 58, and that number is forecast to increase to 27,100 by the year 2050. The same data shows that in 2023, approximately 18,200 vehicles turned onto or off of Airport Road onto N.C. 58 daily, and that number is forecast to increase to 23,200 by the year 2050.
