    Knights fall just short vs. Lawrence in thrilling debut

    Varsity volleyball teams from Greenfield School and Lawrence Academy treated the spectators inside the Knights’ sweltering gym Thursday afternoon to quite a show for a season-opening match.

    Greenfield took the early lead then watched the Warriors seize control before forcing a fifth set and eventually succumbing by two points. Lawrence, which lost its season debut this week, evened its record at 1-1 with the 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 17-15 victory.

    Junior Emily Barnes paced the Knights with nine kills and 16 assists while junior libero Natalie Copeland came up with 21 digs and served eight aces.

    Senior Darcy Dean and junior Brooklyn Scott each delivered seven kills for the Knights, who totaled 35. Dean added eight digs and four aces while freshman Georgia Daniel rained a team-high nine aces on 17 serves to go with five kills and 13 digs.

    Greenfield hit at a .116 clip with Copeland leading the way at .429. The Knights served 83.7% and landed 24 aces.

    There will be no time to rest for Greenfield until the weekend as the Knights host Fayetteville Christian on Friday at 6:30 p.m. then launch NCISAA 2-A/3-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference play Monday, Aug. 19, against The Epiphany School of New Bern.
