Chris Hardee of Wilson is representing all 100 counties as a state delegate at next week’s Democratic National Convention when Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to become the party’s nominee for president. It will be his seventh time as a delegate.

Hardee is headed to Chicago to take part in this year’s event. He said he’s excited because he hasn’t been able to attend a convention in person since 2012.

“I’m fortunate enough to have been to a few past conventions, but this is history making,” Hardee said. “I’m excited. It’s unprecedented, this late in the game, with the energy behind Vice President Harris.”

Hardee is the former regional director for the office of Congressman Don Davis but now works in real estate while working as a campaign consultant on the side. His biggest job, he said, is being a father to three boys.

“I’ve been to, this will be seven of the last eight conventions now,” Hardee said. “I missed the 2016 convention because I’d just had newborn twins. My wife kind of looked at me and said, ‘There’s no way you’re going.’”

Hardee said along with nominating a presidential candidate, the convention is an important time for caucus meetings.

“It’s a great opportunity for our party to tell our story and see delegates from across our state,” Hardee said. “Every caucus will also be meeting. I’m looking forward to getting out and working with other Democrats in various caucuses to figure out how we engage a more diverse crowd in this election.”

Hardee said the convention gives a space and a platform to present individual needs to all members of the party. He said while there are opportunities for fraternizing, the convention is really in the business of getting to know one another as delegates.

“It’s an exciting time for North Carolina,” Hardee said. “We’ve always been engaged, but as we’ve seen, it’s even more so in the last couple weeks. We’re seeing a lot more interest in folks wanting to help the national ticket and state races in North Carolina, which has not been the case in some cycles.”

Hardee said the convention symbolizes the beginning of the Harris-Walz era.

“It’s about being a delegate to continue to promote the Biden-Harris record to date and looking forward to the Harris-Walz record,” Hardeen said. “We’ve got to be getting ahead on their record, not just getting by.”
