The cause of a fire that destroyed a garbage truck Saturday is undetermined.

Deputy Fire Chief James P. Campbell of Wilson Fire/Rescue Services said fire crews were called to 912 U.S. 301 N. at 3:01 p.m.

The truck was in the southbound lane near the highway’s intersection with Ward Boulevard and Lipscomb Road directly in front of Wilson Community College’s Lee Technology Center campus.

“Crews arrived to find a GFL garbage truck with fire showing from the engine, driver and garbage compartment,” Campbell said. “Fire crews quickly knocked the fire down in the engine and driver compartment and kept the garbage compartment cool until GFL maintenance was able to open the back of truck and unload the contents to fully extinguish it.”

“An extensive overhaul was conducted to make sure all of the product that was unloaded was completely extinguished,” Campbell added.

Campbell said the fire’s cause is undetermined.

Nine personnel and three fire vehicles responded to the call. No firefighters or civilians were injured.

Campbell estimated a loss of about $300,000, the vehicle’s total value.

The Wilson Police Department, Wilson County EMS, Wilson County Emergency Communications and GFL Environmental crews also responded to the fire.

“All agencies did an exceptional job in making sure this incident was mitigated quickly and without injury,” Campbell said.
