Sallie B. Howard School started its varsity eight-player football program last year and Thursday the Eagles had a successful debut for their junior varsity team with a 34-14 victory at Community Christian School.

“I was proud of the guys and how many of them stepped up,” said Eagles varsity head coach Marquis Spell. “I believe some of them surprised themselves.”

Spell credited the offensive line led by David Christman, Chris Barnes and Joshua Liles for paving the way for the offense.

Nevin Bland ran for four touchdowns and more than 120 yards while Antwon Gilchrist ran for another score and more than 60 years. Spell also praised quarterback Michael Illidan for playing well.

The Sallie B. defensive effort was led by Gilchrist, Michael Dickerson, Tyshaun Hassell, and Brian Rountree Jr.

Anthony Evans is head coach of the Eagles JV unit with Kavajae Ellis, Brian Rountree and Quan Farmer assisting him.

Tee Bohne rushed for 177 yards and two TDs for the Cyclones, who were playing their first game of the season. Carson Beamon ran for the other CCS score while Charlie Bunn led the defense with 4.5 tackles and caught three passes on offense.

Community Christian is back in action next Thursday, Aug. 29, when they visit Columbia while the Eagles are off until Sept. 5 when they are the guests of Lawrence Academy.
