After taking its first loss Tuesday in a young boys soccer season so far, Greenfield School bounced back cleanly with a 6-0 shutout of visiting Harrells Christian on a spectacular Thursday evening, Aug. 22, at Forbes Field.

Five different players scored for the Knights in the nonconference outing, lifting them to 2-1 under first-year head coach George Venturella. Greenfield, which saw its season-opening Dr. Robert T. Stone Memorial Showcase wiped out by Tropical Storm Debby, fell 2-1 at home to The Burlington School on Tuesday.

“Today was good, because we were able to get everyone some time on that field and really get the confidence back going,” Venturella said in a postgame telephone interview. “Not that it ever got lost from the game on Tuesday, but it always helps to reassure, hey, we know what we’re doing, when we play good soccer, we look good.

“So Harrells Christian, by no means was an easy take on today, but the guys did their part, and every player, when they got on, knew their role, and were able to help each other out along the way. So I was very impressed with them throughout it. The passing looked good through the midfield. We actually took advantage of our chances today unlike Tuesday, and that was the difference.”

Senior Simon Quinn scored the first of his two goals about five minutes into the match to give the NCISAA 2-A Knights the quick lead. Junior Landyn Coolbaugh. who had to sit out Tuesday’s game because of a red card at the end of last season, provided the assist.

Coolbaugh and freshman John Dean each notched a goal before Quinn buried his second to give the Knights a 4-0 lead going into halftime.

Sophomore Grayson Coulter and junior Noah Wright completed the scoring in the second half while Coolbaugh finished with two assists. Daniel Satterfield and Cooke Rhodes each had a helper.

Starting goalkeeper Kel Winstead tallied six saves in the first half for Greenfield while Danny Pham played between the posts in the second have, registering one save. The Knights totaled 13 shots on goal to seven by the Crusaders (1-2), also an NCISAA 2-A team.

Venturella recognized the defensive play of center backs Coulter and Wright as well as Satterfield on the outside as instrumental in posting the shutout, the second for Greenfield this season.

The Knights wrap up a busy second week Friday with a trip to New Bern to take on The Epiphany School in the 2-A/3-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference opener.

“We’ve got a farther trip for our first game out to Epiphany, but the guys are looking forward to it,” Venturella said. “We’ve been talking about things all week, been able to work on small things here and there that we saw in the past games and we feel good going into conference and confident with what we can bring. So I’m looking forward to it, and Epiphany’s a good starting point for us to be able to see, as far as what other teams in the conference are looking like.”
