An accidental fire caused the evacuation of residents and damaged a hall at Wilson House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Wilson Thursday night.

Deputy Fire Chief James Campbell of Wilson Fire/Rescue Services said in a news release Friday that fire crews were called to 1800 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway SE at 9:57 p.m. Campbell said no one was hurt, but 22 residents were evacuated and 12 were able to shelter in place. He said the evacuated residents were temporarily relocated to another hall in the building.

“On arrival, fire crews found a one-story assistant living facility with smoke showing from the 200 hall side of the building,” Campbell said. “Fire crews quickly located and extinguished the fire in the exterior walls around the 200 hall exit door. The cause of the accidental fire was sparks that got into the wall from work being done to the door earlier.”

Campbell estimates losses at $25,000 in property damages and $5,000 for contents. Wilson Fire/Rescue was assisted on scene by the Wilson Police Department, Wilson County EMS and Wilson Communications. Campbell said the employees of the facility and emergencyservices crews did an exceptional job by quickly evacuating and relocating the residents.
