DUDLEY — The faces may have changed but Fike High is still where it’s always been on the 3-A Quad County Conference girls golf scene — on top.

The Golden Demons, who won NCHSAA 3-A championships in 2021 and 2022 and finished fourth in the state last season, saw nearly their entire lineup graduate. But with senior Claire Proctor and sophomores Payton Durham, Addison Barnes and McKinley Pipkin joined by freshmen Kensley Hill and Loulie Harris, the Demons of head coach Glenn Jones kept their hold on the Quad County with a two-stroke win over South Johnston in the conference opener Monday, Aug. 26, at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Led by Hill with 45 on the nine-hole round, Fike totaled 141 to clip the Trojans at 143. West Johnston was third at 148, followed by Southern Wayne (163), Hunt (168), C.B. Aycock (174), Smithfield-Selma (178) and East Wake (180).

Fike’s top three was tightly bunched with Durham firing a 47 and Harrison carding a 49 to account for the Demons’ scoring.

“You could tell they had some freshman nerves going on today in the match,” Jones said, “but I thought they played great and they were able to hold it together to help our team win our first match of the year.”

Barnes came in with a 58 while Pipkin shot 62. Proctor, playing an exhibition, turned in a 60.

While Jones was glad to get the win, he said his team can shoot much lower.

“Going in I thought we could shoot in the mid-130s as a team, based on the way I have seen these girls play over the summer,” he said. “Our goal is to eventually shoot in the 120s for nine holes. They are only going to get better as we go. I was impressed with how they carried themselves today and play through some tough situations at times.”

The medalist was West Johnston senior Jenna Underwood with a 39 to clip South Johnston’s Danielle Morgan by four strokes. Hill and Durham placed third and fourth, respectively, with South Johnston’s Reese Penny edging Harrison for fifth place.

Hunt was paced by Morgan Radford with a 53 while Cassidy Kyles shot 56 and Maizi Bunn and Leah Hawkins each carded a 59. Jacey Creech shot 60 for the Warriors.

Sophie Veal’s 54 led C.B. Aycock while Marinah Bryan and Kate Horton each shot 60.

The next Quad County outing is set for Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Reedy Creek Golf Club, hosted by West Johnston.

    Warriors beat Saints 8-1

DUDLEY — With a sweep of singles, Hunt High ruled Monday’s 3-A Quad County Conference girls tennis match at Southern Wayne by an 8-1 margin.

It was the second win against one loss for the Warriors, all in Quad County play, as they got singles wins in the pro-set format from Reagan Owens, Callie Mooring, Emma Reel, Darby Davis and Ella Marks against the short-handed Saints. Amy Hernandez won the No. 6 singles match by forfeit.

Southern Wayne claimed its lone point at No. 1 doubles while the Warriors No. 2 duo of Hernandez-Elena Summerlin won 8-0 for their first career victory.

Hunt will host East Wake on Wednesday as QCC play continues.

    Demons zap Spartans 9-0

SMITHFIELD — A trip down I-95 on a toasty Monday afternoon for the Fike High girls tennis team added up to another 3-A Quad County Conference victory in a 9-0 shutout of host Smithfield-Selma.

The Golden Demons, now 6-0 overall, rose to 3-0 in the Quad County and 45-0 all-time in the four-year history of the league.

Seniors Kaden Biamby and Zoe Mitchell each pushed their singles marks to 6-0 with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while Katelyn Wilson notched her first win at No. 6. Getting the start with freshman Kensley Hill playing golf for Fike on Monday, Wilson downed Smithfield-Selma’s Elsi Chirinos 6-1, 4-6, (10-4).

The Spartans exited 1-3 in all matches and 0-2 in QCC action. Fike hosts C.B. Aycock in a conference clash Wednesday, Aug. 28.
