The Wilson Evening Lions Club is sponsoring free vision and hearing screenings next week. The N.C. Lions Mobile Vision and Hearing Screening van will be out from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, in the Walmart parking lot on Forest Hills Road.

“This is a screening and should not be confused with a complete eye or hearing examination,” JoAnne Wood, Wilson Evening Lions Club member, said in a news release. She said no diagnoses are made on the mobile screening unit. Organizers say oftentimes there are individuals who have difficulty seeing and hearing things but do not want or can’t afford to go to an eye doctor or hearing professional. Others may be concerned that their child’s vision seems limited.

    HOW IT WORKS

Individuals who get screened will be provided with the screening results. If further examination is deemed necessary, a recommendation will be made to that individual whether they should have a complete eye examination, organizers said. Each individual may choose a health care professional of their choice for any medical care, further advice and/or verification of the screening results.

Vision screenings include a visual acuity test, (both for far and near vision) and a field vision test (how well a person can see motion in their field of vision while looking at a fixed object). Hearing screenings are conducted through a sound booth.

    SCREENING GUIDELINES

    • Individuals being screened have to be at least 6 years old.

    • All participants under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign the registration form.

    • Participants who do not speak English should have an interpreter available to assist them.
