With three goals in each half, the Hunt High varsity boys soccer team posted its highest scoring output of the season with a 6-3 nonconference win at home Wednesday, Aug. 28, against Goldsboro.

The 3-A Quad County Conference Warriors matched their highest win total in the last three seasons as they improved to 3-1-1 overall while the 2-A Neuse 6 Conference Cougars were playing their first game.

Juniors Will Doll and Dominick Hamilton each scored twice and made an assist for the Warriors, who totaled 14 shots in the match.

“I’m very pleased with our improvement on efficiency with our shots,” Hunt head coach Harrison Lamm said. “In previous games, we were getting multiple shot opportunities, but they just really weren’t dangerous, and so that’s something we addressed in practice. I see we scored six off of 14 shots, and their keeper made some really good saves that kept it from being a bigger score line.”

The Cougars broke the ice quickly with a goal around the 90-second mark of the match. The Warriors issued a response some five minutes later when freshman Talon Mayo knocked in a corner kick by Hamilton in the seventh minute.

Hunt took the lead for keeps in the 11th minute when Doll converted a pass from senior Jay Misback. Doll padded the Hunt lead just before halftime when he connected for a goal off a pass from freshman Santi Herrera in the 36th minute.

Herrera got another assist in the 45th minute when he had the helper for Hamilton, who then scored a minute later on his own. Misback completed Hunt’s six-goal run in the 49th off an assist by Doll.

Goldsboro tacked on goals in the 56th and 60th minutes to narrow the margin. Hunt goalkeeper Victor Gutierrez had three saves in the first half but eight in the second for 11 in the match.

The Warriors have three nonconference matches remaining on their schedule — two against teams Hunt has handily beaten in Rocky Mount and Nash Central and another against winless Princeton. The Warriors could very well have six wins by the time they start their 14-game QCC schedule Sept. 16 at C.B. Aycock.

Lamm said the goal is to make the state playoffs, something that seems realistic for the first time in a few years.

“I feel good,” he said. “I think we’re finally starting to clean up some of the areas that need improvement. So, within the next week or two, I think we’ll be ready to really be tested and compete.”

Warriors zap East Wake in singles

Host Hunt didn’t waste time in the heat during Wednesday afternoon’s match, handling East Wake in order in singles and leaving doubles to melt on the empty court.

The Warriors’ 6-0 victory that was played without doubles was their third straight after an opening loss to C.B. Aycock, leaving Hunt 3-1 overall and in 3-A Quad County Conference matches.

Senior Reagan Owens at No. 1, Emma Reel at No. 3 and Darby Davis at No. 4 each won their singles matches 8-0 in the pro-set format. Callie Mooring won 8-1 at No. 2 and Elena Summerlin picked up her first career win at No. 6. Ella Marks was up 5-1 when her East Wake opponent, Bernice Martinez, retired.

The visiting Warriors departed 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Quad County play. Hunt will visit South Johnston on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
