STANHOPE — Southern Nash’s boys soccer program continued to flex in what is becoming an impressive early season for the 3-A Firebirds of the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference with a 3-1 defeat of NCHSAA 2-A power Greene Central on Tuesday.

The Firebirds, now 4-0-2 with both draws coming against 4-A Millbrook, got goals from senior Jefferson Barahona-Murillo as well as junior Joshua Dominguez and Victor Vargas. Senior Erick Arroyo, junior Mario Arredondo and sophomore Jiovanny Macias provided an assist each.

    VOLLEYBALL

CCS turns the tides on Christ Covenant

WINTERVILLE — Some recent unpleasant history threatened to repeat itself for the Community Christian varsity volleyball team Tuesday, but the Cyclones snuffed it quickly to pull out a five-set victory at Christ Covenant.

The Spartans had rallied from a 2-0 deficit in sets to beat the Cyclones in five sets on their home court at Peace Church a week ago. Community Christian won the first two games Tuesday 25-20, 25-17 before watching the Spartans tie the game by winning sets 3 and 4 25-14, 25-6. However, CCS clinched the victory with a 15-11 win in set 5.

It was the second victory in three Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association region matches as CCC improved to 4-2 overall.

Autumn Bradshaw and Claire Carter led the Cyclones at the net with eight kills each while Bradshaw added six assists. Gracie Beamon smacked down seven kills while serving 11 points with two aces. Emilee Finberg registered 12 assists, nine service points, including an ace, and four kills. Payton Bush served 13 points with an ace while Libby Bass landed three aces in her seven points.

Warriors brush aside Saints for 3-0 QCC start

DUDLEY — The 2024 Hunt High varsity volleyball season looks to follow familiar form for the Warriors, who took a beating with their rigid nonconference slate only to settle nicely into 3-A Quad County Conference play.

The Warriors, who entered conference play on a four-game skid, picked up their third straight victory — all against QCC competition — with a 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 verdict over host Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

Hunt, 4-5 overall, was led by freshman Makenzie Collins with 19 kills, six digs and two service aces while senior Presley Frazier totaled 14 kills, six aces and eight digs. GIRLS TENNIS

    Demons whitewash Warriors 9-0

WENDELL — After not yielding a point against East Wake in six singles matches, Fike’s starters turned the court over to some less experienced players to finish up the sweep Tuesday.

Wilson and Warenda moved into the starting lineup with the absence of senior Kaden Biamby and freshman Kensley Hill.

Fike, now 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Quad County play, will continue its league schedule Wednesday at home against Southern Wayne. East Wake slipped 1-3 overall as it remained winless in three QCC outings.
