A pivotal nonconference matchup against a Rocky Mount Academy team Greenfield School could very well see again in the NCISAA 2-A boys soccer playoffs was nearly all Knights in a 6-2 victory at Forbes Field on Wednesday evening, Sept. 4.

Junior Landyn Coolbaugh had three goals and three assists as Greenfield roared from a 2-2 deadlock in the first half with four unanswered goals for its fourth straight win. The Knights, now 7-1-1 are ranked No. 4 among NCISAA 2-A teams by MaxPreps while the Eagles (5-2) are No. 5.

“The boys know that competition is only going to get harder,” said Greenfield head coach George Venturella. “As teams have more time together to get in their rhythm, the more we are going to have to continue to adjust on the fly. They did just that tonight to help stop the scoring threats of a strong RMA team.”

The Knights jumped in front of the Eagles when sophomore T Good slammed in a shot to the back post for an unassisted goal before Coolbaugh connected on a penalty kick following a foul drawn by teammate Cooke Rhodes.

That 2-0 lead wouldn’t stand long, however, as the Eagles retaliated quickly with back-to-back goals to tie the score. But that wouldn’t last long either.

“After a few adjustments in the midfield and defense, we rallied back to add three more,” Venturella reported.

Coolbaugh knocked in two more goals and Rhodes added one as Greenfield went up 5-2 at the half.

Sophomore Redden Powell finished the scoring in the second half when he ran on a ball sent by Coolbaugh for his third assist.

Senior goalkeeper Kel Winstead picked up three saves on the night.

“The week is not over yet as we have another competitive match (Thursday) night against Coastal Christian,” reminded Venturella.
