ROANOKE RAPIDS — Not all undefeated teams are the same, as the Southern Nash High varsity football team illustrated Thursday night, Sept. 26, with a 54-7 destruction of a previously unbeaten Roanoke Rapids team.

The 3-A Firebirds rushed for a season-high 434 yards as they pushed their overall record to 6-0 while improving to 2-0 in 2-A/3-A Big East Conference games. The 2-A Yellow Jackets, with a diet of primarily NCHSAA 1-A and independent schools, dropped to 5-1 and 1-1, respectively.

Southern Nash senior Tylik Mitchell added to his state-leading season rushing total with 254 yards on 14 carries. Mitchell, ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and 16th nationally by MaxPreps.com coming into Thursday’s game, now has 1,323 yards.

Mitchell bolted 27 yards to finish Southern Nash’s first possession with less than a minute and a half off the game clock. He later caught a 22-yard TD pass from quarterback Isaiah Battle and ran for a 41-yard TD in the second half.

Jaden Hartsfield, who ran in the two-point conversion after Mitchell’s first TD, scored on runs of 11 and 19 yards and hauled in a 39-yard TD toss from Battle, who was 2 for 4 without an interception.

Israel Whitaker had a 2-yard run for six points and D.J. Baker reached the end zone from 13 yards for Southern Nash’s final TD. Brayden Wells kicked four straight PATs for Southern Nash in his placekicking debut after a series of failed conversion runs.

Roanoke Rapids’ only touchdown came on the Yellow Jackets’ first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Quarterback Carson Duncan flipped a 7-yard pass to J.C. Skinner, who pitched the ball back to Bobby Hawkins Jr. for an 83-yard “hook and ladder” play.

The Firebirds will have an open date on the schedule next Friday night but will return Friday, Oct. 11, at home against Bunn.
