Junior Landyn Coolbaugh scored with seven seconds in the second overtime period Thursday, lifting his Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over John Paul II at Forbes Field.
At this point in the season, any win is gold for Greenfield in its quest to improve and enhance its position in the upcoming North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A boys soccer playoffs.
Thursday’s 2-1 thrilling overtime victory kept the Knights firmly in contention for one of the top four seeds in the 2-A bracket, but it won’t help them in the 2-A/3-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference. Greenfield, now 10-6-1 overall, climbed to 5-4 in CPIC matches while the 3-A Saints slipped to 12-4 overall and 8-3 in CPIC play. John Paul II is in second place, just ahead of fellow 3-A teams Coastal Christian (8-7-2, 7-3 CPIC) in third and well behind front-running Cape Fear Academy (13-3-1, 9-0).
The game was scoreless until the Saints broke through with about 10 minutes left in regulation. Sophomore Grayson Coulter then got a dramatic equalizer with seconds left after winning the ball in midfield.
The teams played a scoreless first overtime period and were nearly through the other before Coolbaugh’s goal off a pass by freshman John Dean.
Greenfield senior goalkeeper Kel Winstead rang up an amazing 20 saves.
Greenfield, ranked No. 5 among NCISAA 2-A teams by MaxPreps.com , ended a three-game skid, all against 3-A teams. The Knights will host Liberty Christian on Monday at 6 p.m.
