SMITHFIELD — Defense was the ticket for the Fike High varsity football team again Friday night, Oct. 4, as the Golden Demons posted their second straight shutout in a 37-0 victory at Smithfield-Selma.
That win pushed Fike’s overall record to 4-2 and, more importantly, to 3-0 and tied for first place with C.B. Aycock (6-0, 3-0 QCC), which visits Fike next Friday.
“That’s two back-to-back weeks of shutouts by the defense and that’s awesome to see,” said Fike head coach Rocky Lewis. “That’s the way you want them to play and that leads up to our biggest game of the year, conference-wise, with C.B. Aycock this week. So there’s a lot to play for there. So you want to be confident defensively going into a game like that and our guys are flying to the ball and being aggressive and making the tackles they’re supposed to make. So that’s that’s really good to see.”
Lewis noted the Demons held the Spartans (0-6, 0-3 QCC) just 23 yards of offense while forcing four turnovers. Senior linebacker Kam Barbee scooped up a SSS fumble while Xzavion Barnes, Braylen Loftin and William Monk picked off Spartan passes.
The defense also scored when a second-half snap deep in Fike territory was mishandled by SSS and turned into a safety.
Junior Micah Foula kicked three field goals for Fike, splitting the uprights for 33, 28 and 29 yards while junior quarterback Cam Pittman bulled in for three short TD runs.
Fike took the ball downfield on its first possession, negotiating through three penalties, with Pittman leaning in from the 1-yard line for the score.
After two Foula field goals, Pittman found the end zone again for a 20-0 halftime lead. Pittman scored again in the third quarter after the safety before senior Jeremiah Peart rambled 71 yards for the final TD.
“He had to break some tackles and it was an impressive run,” Lewis said of Peart, who had a season-high 152 rushing yards.
