Greenfield School lost in three sets to John Paul II Catholic in a 2-A/3-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference varsity volleyball clash on the Knights’ floor Thursday, Oct. 3, but the Knights did not go down easily.
The CPIC-leading Saints had to battle before emerging with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 victory for their 10th straight win. John Paul II departed 15-4 overall and 11-1 with a comfortable lead atop the CPIC standings while fifth-place Greenfield stands 7-9 and 4-5, respectively.
Phoebe Mitchiner, an eighth grader, led the Knights at the service line with 14 points, including 11 aces, while adding four digs.
Freshman Gretchen Daniel and junior Brooklyn Scott each rang up five kills while Daniel had two aces, a block and two digs. Darcy Dean added four kills and seven digs while junior Natalie Copeland supplied seven digs, seven assists, three aces and three kills.
Greenfield concludes the regular season this week, starting with a match at Liberty Christian in Richlands on Monday before home matches against Cape Fear Academy on Tuesday and Wayne Country Day on Thursday.
Ladybirds survive 5-set scare by Gryphons
STANHOPE — With a 2-A/3-A Big East Conference volleyball championship in the balance, Southern Nash nearly had a Senior Night to forget Thursday, Oct. 3.
Rocky Mount, in last place and winless in the Big East, stretched the league-leading Ladybirds to five sets in what turned out to be an unlikely 25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 24-26, 15-11 thriller. Sophomore Abigail Marks served the 3-A Ladybirds to a 9-0 start in the decisive fifth game.
Southern Nash, now 15-2 overall, retained its hold on first place at 8-2, a game ahead of 2-A Bunn (12-3, 7-3 Big East). The Ladybirds visit 3-A Northern Nash (9-7, 4-6) on Tuesday before the final regular-season match Thursday at 3-A Franklinton (9-9, 6-3), which handed Southern Nash one of its losses.
The 3-A Gryphons left still winless in 10 Big East matches and 2-15 overall.
Savanna Baines, one of eight Ladybirds seniors, led them with 14 kills and two blocks while classmate Carlee Beckham rang up 11 kills, 26 digs and eight service aces. Another senior, Hailey Glover, hammered six kills.

SN stops Franklinton in finale
FRANKLINTON — Southern Nash finished the regular season on a winning note Thursday with a 7-2 victory at 2-A/3-A Big East Conference rival Franklinton.
The verdict left the 3-A Ladybirds with a 5-8 overall record as they finished fifth in the Big East at 4-7.
Earning singles wins Thursday for Southern Nash were Melanie Olvera at No. 2, Lauren Maldonado at No. 3, Savannah Wood at No. 4, Taryn Reams at No. 5 and Hayden Baker at No. 6. Reams teamed with Julissa Maldonado to win 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while Lauren Maldonado-Diana Perez took an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
The Big East tournament is set for Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Rocky Mount.
