A wave of yellow and then red cards prematurely ended Barton College’s men’s soccer home game against archrival Mount Olive on an otherwise beautiful Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, at Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
Barton scored a goal in each half to take a 2-0 lead and that stood as final when the match was halted with 13:53 to play in the second half and eventually called. The Bulldogs upped their record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas matches.
The Trojans (2-4-3, 1-2-3 CC) picked up three yellow cards in the first half. After Barton’s Dan Ivanov and Tommy Migliarotti earned yellow cards of their own early in the second half, UMO then proceeded to receive two more yellows and two red cards, one to defender Colby Thompson, before a final yellow
Migliarotti gave Barton its first goal when he finished a pass from senior midfielder Gabriel Slemer Lopes in the 12th minute. Sophomore midfielder Hayden Summerfield doubled the Barton lead in the 76th, also on an assist by Slemer Lopes, now with a team-high six assists.
Right after Summerfield’s goal, the Trojans were presented a yellow card and then a red card on the team.
Bulldogs keeper Steingrimuer Gunnarsson notched his third shutout of the season while making three saves.
Barton will travel to Murfreesboro on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Chowan.
