Like a slow, steady drumbeat, Times freelance photographer Sheldon Vick seems destined to capture another Football Forecast championship as he expanded his lead yet again by going 10-2 in Week 7. Vick’s only missteps — Greene Central over Ayden-Grifton and ECU over Charlotte — were shared by the panel at-large as he increased his lead over retired Times sports editor and current contributor Tom Ham to five games.

The turning point for Vick was his choice of North Pitt over SouthWest Edgecombe, a 40-36 Panthers win that wasn’t settled until Monday, that nobody else had. Times sports editor Paul Durham remained in third place alone as he matched Ham’s 9-3 week.

Guest Picker Dwight Taylor, Hunt High varsity boys basketball coach and hall-of-famer, turned in a credible 8-4 showing that was tied by former Times sports writer Andrew Schnittker but still languishes in last place.

Coach-of-the-Year candidate Mitch Hayes proffered the worst showing in Week 7 at 7-5 but it wasn’t enough to send him to the cellar with Schnittker.

Wilson County Schools athletic director Brent Walston, a sometimes soccer ref and amateur photographer, subs in as the Guest Picker for Week 8.
