For anyone in Clark County seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Beech Springs Farm Market is a throwback to a time when life meandered like an old creek.

“The market was built as a gas station in 1941 as a gas station,” said co-owner Bailey Milheiser.

After purchasing it from Mary Beth Hendricks, Bailey Milheiser and her father have owned the market with for the past three seasons.

Hendrick’s grandfather built the building that the market currently occupies.

Milheiser loves to show off the history of her store.

“We have lots of old pictures in the store, and we try to show them to customers as much as we can because we think it is cool,” she said. “All the woodwork that our chaser register and other items sit on are original.”

That was one of the reasons why she wanted to take over for Hendricks after working for her for four years. The others were a dream of owning a small business and the store’s vibe.

“I love the customers and the atmosphere,” Milheiser said. “I didn’t want to see the store go empty like a lot of places in Winchester have.”

Beech Springs offers a little bit of everything grocery-wise, including fresh fruits and vegetables and a cooler full of local meat.

“We also have a lot of canned goods like bread and butter pickles and jams, preserves, sauces and dressings,” Milheiser said.

The store is also home to items from over 30 local vendors who exhibit at Beech Springs.

Milheiser sees it as a way of giving back.

“Not everybody has an opportunity to have a storefront. It is another great way for our customers to see exactly what the people in Winchester are offering and what they are making.”

One can find locally baked bread, t-shirts and even photos.

Just don’t expect to find one item in particular.

“We joke that you can find almost anything here, but you can’t find toilet paper,” Milheiser said with a chuckle.

Beech Springs is not just an excellent place to experience history or shop; it is also a great hangout for anyone needing a rest or a meal.

“On Friday through Sunday, we have lunch specials,. We’ve also started doing take-home dinner kits on Sundays,” Milhesier said.

In addition to specials, the market also offers homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese.

Customers are invited to stay and eat, though.

“If you stay, buy a lunch and sit out at our picnic tables, it is very quaint,” Milheiser said.

The market also offers a playground and an orchard for its customers to relax in.

Beech Springs Farm Market is located at 4776 Old Boonesboro Road and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

For more information, visit the market’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
