Some of the best youth chess players in Oregon competed Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at the Chess for Success State Tournament at the Expo Center in Portland. After winning the regional tournament for Coos County in February, Coquille won the honor of sending both an elementary and a middle school team to play in the team State Championships on Friday April 12th.

Noah Ish-Shalom, Ari Ish-Shalom, Abigail Fanno, Ruth Scott, Maddison Fanno and alternate Jaylee Barnett were the Coquille Valley Elementary team. They managed to win 3 of 5 games against the best teams of Oregon who each had to win their country regional tournaments.

The junior high team had players Jeremiah Thompson, James Hanburg, Ayden Gardner, and Adrian Rangel. They were one player short so had to take an automatic loss on board five. Despite the severe handicap, they won 2 of their 5 games.

Saturday was the individual Grade State Chapionships and Coquille sent five players and Lighthouse of Coos Bay sent two players.

Frank Morse never lost but had two draws and placed Second for the High School Individual State Championships. Misha von Dassow suffered one loss and placed Second for the 8th grade Individual State Championship.

    Other individuals:

7th grade Jeremiah Thompson won 3 games

6th grade Adrian Rangel won 2 games

5th grade Noah Ish-Shalom won 3 games and Abigail Fanno won 2 games

4th grade Nadia von Dassow won 3.5 games.

Amazing results when playing the best players in Oregon.

These youths as well as many more from Coos and Curry County are heading to Seaside this following weekend April 19th and 20th to compete in the Seaside Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation State Championships for those who have competed in United States Chess Federation rated tournaments and will compete to become the Oregon Representatives for several National Championships.

They will also get the opportunity to enjoy side events of Blitz, Bughouse and Crazy Chess.
