EUGENE — Myrtle Point senior Mason Detzler was aiming to become the Class 1A state meet record holder in the shot put.

He will have to settle for a second straight title in the event and the all-time record for Class 1A he set earlier in the season.

Detzler’s winning throw of 54 feet was more than five feet further than the runner-up for the event. But he came up six centimeters short of the meet record for the event.

“I was hoping for the record,” said Detzler, who threw 58-11 ½ earlier in the season and was over 57 feet four meets in a row, all better than the previous record for the classification.

He admitted feeling a lot of pressure heading into the event.

“I was so nervous,” he said. “I have high expectations.”

Still, he was pleased to win and will aim to add the discus title Friday — he is close to the record in that event, too.

Detzler’s teammate Logan Clayburn finished eighth in the shot put with an effort of 44-9.

Myrtle Point also will have a presence in the running finals.

Thomas Ferren won his preliminary heat in the 100 meters, qualifying second overall for the final and also won his heat in the 200 and is seeded first for the final. In the 110 hurdles, Ferren stumbled along the way, but made it into the final with the seventh-best time.

Pacific also had a few qualifiers for the finals

Dalton steers advanced in the 100 meters by placing third in his heat, though he missed the final in the 200.

Tucker Long earned the final spot in the finals for the 110 hurdles and qualified for the final in the 300-meter hurdles by placing third in his heat.

The South Coast had two placers in the Class 1A girls javelin. Powers freshman Danika Bushnell had a big personal best on her final throw to finish second with a throw of 116-7, just three inches behind winner Feirin McConnell of Triangle Lake.

Myrtle Point’s Kenzie Robinson was fourth in the event with a throw of 114-10.

Myrtle Point’s Jayme Padgett placed third in the discus with a best throw of 106-3.
