    Summer chess tournament fun in Coquille

    Saturday August 3rd began with rain, but it did not rain on the Fifth Street Park Chess Tournament in Coquille. Even as the clouds threatened to end the tournament early, the warm weather allowed for intense chess game with badminton and squirt guns in between the rounds of chess fun. Several fresh players joined the regular group of players including Barley Stidham from Medford.

    The fun activities abounded during the event but did not stop from the players working hard to compete. The winners included:

    Advanced Players

    1st place: Mark Claiborne Adult

    2nd place: Frank Morse 12th grade

    3rd place: a three-way tie between Matthew Bottoroff adult, Tate Thomas 12th grade, Bradford McKeown adult.

    Intermediate Players

    1st place: Skyler White-Ross 9th grade

    2nd place: Adrian Rangel 7th grade

    3rd place: a three-way tie between Ruth Scott 3rd grade, George Philippeos 4th grade and Gus Philippeos 2nd grade
