An assault that occurred on August 15, 2024, led to the arrest of two men on criminal charges.

On August 15, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the North Coos 9-1-1 Center received a report that an intoxicated man had broken out the window of a car parked at Wendy’s, 925 S. Broadway St. in Coos Bay. The caller reported that the suspect had been chased down by several people to the parking lot of Porter’s RV, 971 S. Broadway St., and was now lying on the ground after being assaulted.

Officers from the Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD) and medical personnel arrived, finding the criminal mischief suspect lying on the ground with significant injuries to his head and face. Officers were able to contact and obtain statements from witnesses and those involved in both the criminal mischief to the car and the assault, but the investigation required more follow-up.

On August 21, 2024, CBPD officers reviewed surveillance video from the area. The video showed the owner of the car, 22-year-old Blazen Monzon of Coos Bay, chase down the man from Wendy’s and assault him with a second male, 19-year-old Tyler Hayes of North Bend. During the assault, Mr. Hayes is seen holding the man down on the ground while Mr. Monzon continues to kick and punch him in the face. With this information on the assault, the CBPD issued probable cause for the arrest of Mr. Monzon and Mr. Hayes. The criminal mischief suspect will be referred to the Coos County District Attorney’s Office on the charge of Criminal Mischief 2.

Mr. Monzon and Mr. Hayes have since been arrested by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and the CBPD and were transported to the Coos County Jail on the below-listed charges:

Blazen Monzon: Assault 3, Criminal Conspiracy, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender

Tyler Hayes: Assault 3, Criminal Conspiracy, Strangulation

The CBPD appreciates the aid provided on scene by the Coos Bay Fire Department (CBFD) and Bay Cities Ambulance (BCA).
