Man Arrested on Assault Charges after Pushing Two off Cliff
On July 3 rd , 2024, at 5:25 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a disturbance in progress at a swimming hole on Rock Creek Road near Myrtle Creek Road. A deputy responded and spoke with several subjects at the scene. During the investigation, it was learned the suspect, Zackariah M. Stolen Car and Firearm Recovered
On July 4th , 2024, at 5:07 p.m., a resident on Kuehn Road near Coos Bay called the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to report his vehicle and rifle stolen from his residence. A deputy responded, took the report, and entered the vehicle and weapon as stolen. An attempt to locate (ATL) was sent out county-wide. A short time later, an Oregon State Trooper located the stolen vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The suspect, Gregory J. Kuehne (54), was located inside the vehicle and detained by the Trooper. The investigating Deputy responded and recovered the stolen vehicle and rifle inside the vehicle. Mr. Kuehne was subsequently arrested on the charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Theft I, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. “Police action is not indicative of guilt. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

Fatal Motorcycle Crash on 101
On Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 1:32 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a motorcycle crash on Hwy-101, near milepost 207, in Douglas County. The preliminary investigation indicated a northbound Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Johnny Ray Boles (43) of Notus (ID), attempted to pass in between two northbound vehicles that were occupying both the A and B lanes of travel. The Harley Davidson lost control, left the roadway, and ejected the operator into a guardrail. The operator of the Harley Davidson (Boles) was declared deceased at the scene. The highway was not impacted during the on-scene investigation. The cause of the crash is believed to be unsafe passing. OSP was assisted by Gardner Fire, Douglas County Sheriffs' Office, and ODOT.

New training technique makes AI systems less socially biased
An Oregon State University doctoral student and researchers at Adobe have created a new, cost-effective training technique for artificial intelligence systems that aims to make them less socially biased. Eric Slyman of the OSU College of Engineering and the Adobe researchers call the novel method FairDeDup, an abbreviation for fair deduplication.
