Edwards joined The Temptations in 1968, replacing David Ruffin as the lead singer. His deep, gritty voice helped to redefine the group's sound, transitioning them into the psychedelic soul era. Despite his success, Edwards' life was not without its challenges. In 1989, Edwards joined the Temptations again but soon left once more.

That same year, Edwards was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations, and in 2013, Edwards was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.

Sadly, in 2018 Edwards' wife Brenda Edwards confirmed that he passed from meningitis a couple of days before his 75 birthday, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence artists and musicians today. At the time of his passing, well-known names such as Reverand Jesse Jackson Sr., Judge Greg Mathis, and Kenny Lattimore send their condolences to the Edwards family.
