(Alabama)- In August 2024, the Social Security Administration's Commissioner Martin O'Malley announced the addition of nine new conditions to the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program, along with revisions to two existing conditions. This update aims to expedite the disability claims process for Alabamians with severe medical conditions that clearly meet Social Security's statutory standard for disability.

    The newly recognized conditions include:

    • Bainbridge-Ropers Syndrome
    • Costello Syndrome
    • Adult Heart Transplant Wait List - Status Levels 1-4
    • Child Heart Transplant Wait List - Status Levels 1A/1B (revised existing condition)
    • Histiocytic Malignancies
    • Histiocytosis Syndromes (revised existing condition)
    • Neonatal Marfan Syndrome
    • PACS1 Syndrome
    • Plasmablastic Lymphoma
    • Renal Medullary Carcinoma
    • Snijders Blok-Campeau Syndrome

The Compassionate Allowances program is designed to swiftly identify disability claims where the medical condition or disease is so severe that it clearly qualifies under the disability criteria. This program, which now encompasses 287 conditions, has successfully facilitated the approval of over one million individuals with severe disabilities through an accelerated, yet policy-compliant, disability determination process.

"I am steadfastly committed to reducing the amount of time people wait to receive a decision on their disability claim, and we are making progress," said Commissioner O'Malley. "Compassionate Allowances helps in this effort by accelerating the disability application process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their medical condition."

SSA leverages advanced technology to streamline the determination process. By incorporating electronic medical records through Social Security's Health IT initiative, the SSA can quickly obtain and review a claimant's medical information, leading to faster and more accurate decisions.

Alabamains can apply online for disability benefits or call the agency at 800-772-1213.
