Alabama Court Sentences Out-of-State Woman for Transporting Meth on I-10

(Alabama)- On September 30, 2024, a Texas mother of two, Zolia Rosa Zuniga, was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for her involvement in a methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy. U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock handed down the sentence following her conviction for transporting a significant quantity of meth through Alabama.

According to the Southern District of Alabama, Zuniga’s involvement in the drug ring came to light on January 5, 2021, when she was stopped by a Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit Task Force Officer on Interstate 10. The stop, which was initially for following another vehicle too closely, quickly escalated after a number of suspicious behaviors led the officer to call in a K-9 unit. The dog, named Darlin, alerted officers to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

A search revealed approximately 32 pounds of methamphetamine hidden behind the car’s speakers. Zuniga later admitted that she had agreed to transport the drugs from Texas to the Tampa, Florida area for an individual from Mexico, in exchange for $10,000.
