North Surry jumped into the win column with a dominant 57-0 victory over South Stokes on Aug. 31.

The victory marked the Greyhounds’ first shutout since 2018.

“I thought we did a good job bouncing back after a rivalry game in Week 1,” said North Surry coach Jackson Smith. “Preparation looked different this week; our training staff does a great job making sure everyone is healthy and ready to roll so with the heat we went light. I was a little nervous with us being non-contact all week, but I was proud of our effort this past Friday.”

The Greyhounds forced six turnovers in the shutout win. Derrick Simmons and Payten Sechrist each forced a fumble, while four Hounds each grabbed one interception: Erik Cabrera, Kyler Cain and Owen McMillian and Isaac Webb.

Cain and Cabrera led the team with six total tackles each, followed by Alex Cazares with five and Uriah Kearse with four. Sechrist had a sack against the Sauras (0-2), while Cabrera, Simmons, McMillen and Ben Lakey each added tackles for a loss.

North Surry put up more than 400 yards of total offense in the nonconference win — split 267 passing and 134 rushing. The Hounds scored three touchdowns in the air, four on the ground and one on defense.

Seven North Surry players scored at least one touchdown.

“I thought Coach (Will) Hodges and the offensive staff did a great job in distributing the ball to multiple playmakers, and Coach (Daniel) Draughn and staff did a great job getting our guys ready to fly around and record the first shutout in our tenure.”

North began the game with a defensive touchdown: a 40-yard pick-6 by McMillian that was complimented by a 2-point conversion run from Fisher Leftwich. Zamarri Sweatman then scored his first of two rushing touchdowns, followed by Erik Cabrera knocking down his first of seven PATs.

Quarterback Kam McKnight finished with 267 passing yards and three touchdowns on 11 completions. All three of McKnight’s passing touchdowns — caught by Leftwich, Isaac Webb and Derrick Simmons — occurred in the second quarter. Sweatman ran in another touchdown to bring the score up to 43-0 at halftime.

Jhett Tolbert and Kyler Cain both scored rushing touchdowns in the second half.

The Greyhounds don’t have much time to celebrate their first victory of the season as another big threat is waiting for them in Week 2: South Caldwell. The 4A Spartans are 2-0 on the season after posting back-to-back 46-14 wins.

North Surry dropped its 2023 meeting against South Caldwell 48-22.

“What makes me so excited is we turned on the tape Saturday morning and found a lot of potential growth in all three phases of the game,” Smith said. “We want to challenge our guys to clean up the execution of our schemes and continue to develop a physical identity. We will need to be tough playing against a strong South Caldwell team on the road this week.”
