Flood waters have inundated downtown Elkin resulting in the closure of several streets near the Yadkin River including Standard St. and Bridge St., including access to the bridge into Jonesville. Town Manager Brent Cornelison said in his 20 years here this was as high as he had ever seen the river.

Crater Park and the pickle ball courts are under water and Cornelison said reports are that the river is still rising and expected to crest at 24 feet around 9 p.m. Friday night. Cornelison said water is up around the town's Heritage and Trails Visitors Center as well.

Cornelison said, as yet, Big Elkin Creek, which often floods the municipal park and areas of the high school, was not yet an issue. He said the majority of the flood conditions were coming from the Yadkin River as heavy rains have also poured up river in the mountain communities.

The Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced the cancellation of the Pumpkin Festival which was slated for Saturday, due to the flood conditions.

Across the river in Jonesville, Yadkin EMS Director Keith Vestal said there are closures due to flooding on side streets including River Road and Center St. In Yadkin County, Vestal said there also multiple trees down, including four on hours and one on a car.

Additional details on storm conditions in the area will be reported as they become available.
