County breaks ground on new government building
Officials in Yadkin County held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning to commemorate the start of construction for its newest government building. The property on East Elm St. in Yadkinville across from the courthouse, will become the new location for Yadkin County Tax Office, License Plate Agency, and Information Technology. The site is the former location of the Holcomb House, built in 1899. The historic home was moved to Van Buren St. in October of last year. The new government building will allow citizens to visit...
SCC observes Black History Month with display of special projects
One of the ways in which Surry Community College is observing Black History Month is through the presentation of student poster projects designed to educate others about important events in Black History. Students in SCC’s Public Speaking class, taught by SCC Communication Instructor Emily Workman, have created special poster projects related to Black History Month. These will be on display in the central area of SCC’s Dobson campus for students, staff, and faculty, as well as the public, to view on Feb. 7-8, between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. App Academy axed, Global Learning Academy discussed
Elkin City Schools’ digital Global Learning Academy (GLA) was the primary topic of discussion at a two-hour long special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday night. The board heard a presentation from GLA Principal Heath Foster and GLA teacher Lane Beshears as well as numerous comments from parents and students pleading for continuation of the program. Elkin High School swim teams post strong finishes in regional meet
GREENSBORO — The long-standing tradition of strong swim continued with Elkin High School as the men and women’s teams competed on Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in the 1A/2A NCHSAA Central Regional swim meet. The men, competing with 11 swimmers, were able to collect 181 total points to capture a 3rd place finish overall. The women, who had seven swimmers participating, finished with 186 points and finished in 4th place overall. Yadkin Commissioners approve fire dept. reimbursements
During the February 5, 2024 Board meeting, the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners approved an increased reimbursement rate for fire department dual band radios and turnout gear to $4,800. Also approved during the meeting was a budget amendment increasing tax revenue and expenses for the Towns of Boonville, Jonesville, and Yadkinville; and a budget amendment allocating insurance payments to vehicle maintenance lines for Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services. ...

The treasurer of a Yadkin County fire department stands accused of stealing some of the department’s funds. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Stephen Brian Hutchens, 60, of 1024 Lyndale Drive, Boonville. 12-year old girl victim of murder-suicide on Friendly Rd.
A Yadkin County woman has said the two people found dead at a residence on Friendly Road on Jan. 11 were her young daughter and ex-husband. The Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office issued a brief press release last month stating that two individuals were found deceased in the home after deputies conducted a requested welfare check.
