Budbreak diehards defy drizzle
Folks might not realize it, but a scientific theory was proven over the weekend: people can open and close umbrellas while strolling down the street and balancing glasses full of wine or beer without spilling a drop. This was demonstrated time after time during the annual Budbreak festival Saturday afternoon in downtown Mount Airy as numerous individuals — especially those with big thirsts — deftly rewrote the laws of physics in such ways. ...
Warm weather planting season arrives
The merry month of May has arrived and so has the season of BlackBerry Winter. This is the time when the wild blackberries are white with blooms along the country lanes in the Piedmont. This special time is known as Blackberry Winter. During this period of several weeks, the blackberries are in full bloom and we will have some chilly May nights as well as days. As the berries bloom, write down where they are. When they ripen in late June or early July, you can locate them easily and harvest them to make a blackberry cobbler or some blackberry...
Champagne and birthday cake
There’s a memorable line in Beth Henley’s play, “Crimes of the Heart,” when one of the characters — who has recently discovered her sister murdered her abusive husband — says, “Oh, how I do love having birthday cake for breakfast.” And it’s true. Nothing else is quite as satisfying as birthday cake for breakfast. Except champagne and birthday cake, though not usually for breakfast. Birthday cake, the most celebratory of foods, and champagne, the most celebratory of beverages go together like peas and carrots, as...
