MIAMI — Friday afternoon, Delta Air Lines admits cancellations due to an outage related to Microsoft information technology systems could last through the weekend. Delta acknowledged more than 1,200 Delta mainline and Delta Connection flights were canceled Friday due to a “vendor technology” issue.

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts,” Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz wrote on X Friday morning . “This is not a security incident or cyberattack.”

Before 8:00 AM Friday, Delta released a statement. It reads in part, “Delta has resumed some flight departures after a vendor technology issue impacted several airlines and businesses around the world.” That issue necessitated a pause in Delta’s global flight schedule this morning while it was addressed. Additional delays may take place.

Currently, departing flights out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are facing delays averaging 56 minutes and decreasing, according to FlightAware . Concurrently, arriving flights are delayed by 26 minutes.

Y2K and the Blue Screen of Death

For readers of a certain age, the Crowdstrike outage is what everyone feared would happen with Y2K. Microsoft users worldwide were knocked offline shortly after 4:00 AM Friday. However Linux and Mac users have not been affected.

Friday morning, travelers formed long lines at customer service as more and more flights showed delays. Multiple screens at the Delta customer service counters that normally display flight information, actually displayed the dreaded blue Windows error screen of death due to the outage.

Delta customers can rebook their flight until July 24 without a change fee or a difference in fare. That provision works if the ticket is booked in the same class. Delta is notifying customers and SkyMiles members about delays and cancellations in their itinerary through their Fly Delta app.

Meanwhile, Microsoft did not reply to requests for comment. However, representatives referred individuals to their public statement.

“We acknowledge how impactful this is for our customers, and we’re working to still receive obstructions as soon as possible,” the company said.
