A Black man in Detroit is suing a local hotel after he claims he only received a job interview after reapplying for a position, having changed his name to sound more white. Dwight Jackson filed a lawsuit against the Shinola Hotel on July 3, claiming he was denied a job when he applied as “Dwight Jackson,” but later was offered an interview when he changed his name to “John Jebrowski.” He initially applied under his real name in April for multiple jobs he was qualified for, including a job in reception. When he didn’t hear back, he reapplied with the same credentials under a different name.

Common and Pete Rock’s joint album, ‘The Auditorium Vol. 1,’ is a hip-hop album I didn’t even know I was waiting for
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. There was a time when the pairing of rapper Common and producer Pete Rock would easily be my most anticipated album of any year. Common, the Chicago rapper turned multihyphenate, has long been one of hip-hop’s most beloved MCs; he has both the respect of his hip-hop peers and crafted many commercially successful albums and songs. “The Light,” Common’s song produced by the late, GOAT-level producer J Dilla, is hip-hop canon at this point.

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. Robert Smith is the billionaire who gave the 2019 commencement speech at Morehouse and announced that he was paying off all student loan debt for the entire graduating class. He paid $34 million to clear the debt of all 396 students who finished Morehouse College that spring. That was an extraordinary moment of financial liberation for those students, which gave them the gift of entering the workforce without that burden. I wanted to know why he did it.

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. I’ve decided to stop using the word “ally” in reference to white people — even if they are “doing the work,” and I think other Black people should stop using it as well.

Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’: A pretty good movie that maybe could have used a bank heist
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. It’s that time again in African America when the words “written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry” are flashing across millions of television screens, setting off a few days of discourse about the quality of Black cinema and the responsibility of Tyler Perry, two conversations most of us are completely over. The latest reason for the season is “Divorce in the Black,” a relationship-film-turned-thriller with some really solid acting work courtesy of Meagan Good, Cory Hardrict, Debbi Morgan and Richard Lawson; Good, Hadrict and Lawson recently went through fairly high-profile divorces. That doesn’t matter here, but it almost feels like it has to be mentioned.
