Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Pop Out’ delivered another knockout
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Sometimes, as I tweeted last night, you really do have to pop out and show people. That’s what Kendrick did last night with an epic show. Someone on TikTok said “Kendrick is Juneteenth and Drake is the Fourth of July,” and after last night’s Kendrick concert The Pop Out, that checks out. Kendrick is Black culture while Drake is a huge crossover celebration. But, before we go any further, we need to come together on a name for this historic show that the culture watched as one, talking on Black Twitter and texts about how this show was giving us life.

Watch: White House reacts to calls from Fearless Fund, orgs to protect DEI
Several groups are calling on President Joe Biden and his administration to do more to protect diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) following a series of successful court battles led by conservative groups. The Fearless Fund, which provides grants to Black women-owned businesses, recently had its program suspended by a federal appeals court over the claim that it discriminates against white business owners. The fund’s co-founder Arian Simone has since called on President Biden to take executive action to “safeguard DEI initiatives and funding rights for marginalized groups.” Similarly, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights this week sent a letter to President Biden urging him to do all he can to “promote, protect, and expand programs that lead to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.”

This law is a lifeline for pregnant workers, even as an abortion dispute complicates its enforcement
NEW YORK (AP) — Victoria Cornejo Barrera thought the legal helpline for workers sounded too good to be true and wondered if it was a scam. A month earlier, Cornejo Barrera had been forced to take leave from her job as head custodian at a South Carolina high school after she turned in a doctor’s note asking to be exempt from tasks like climbing ladders and lifting more than 20 pounds because she was pregnant.

On Juneteenth, a journalist honors ancestor at ceremony for Black soldiers who served in Civil War
WASHINGTON (AP) — It was the middle of the night in the summer of 2021 when I — Darren Sands — finally found the missing piece of my family history. My great-great-great-great grandfather Hewlett Sands, born into slavery in Oyster Bay, New York in 1820, was one of the more than 200,000 names listed on the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C. That meant he was a soldier who served in a United States Colored Troops regiment that fought for the Union – and the freedom we still celebrate today.
