NEW YORK (AP) — Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg agreed Friday to testify before what’s likely to be a hostile, Republican-controlled congressional subcommittee, but likely not until after former President Donald Trump is sentenced in July. The House Judiciary Committee chairman, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, wrote Bragg in...

Byron Donalds implied Black people were better off under Jim Crow. So we checked.
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. To be fair, as one of only five African-American Republican members of Congress, being wrong is part of his job. In 2023, Donalds (R-Fla.) appeared on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show to be wrong about critical race theory and “woke” history. He was wrong when he believed his fellow Republicans would support his candidacy for speaker of the House. He was wrong when he voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. So it wasn’t unusual when people accused the two-term congressman of valorizing the era of government-approved racism known as “Jim Crow.”
Report finds that a popular, low-calorie sweetener could increase heart health risks
As more and more people aim to become healthier, low-calorie sweeteners have become a popular replacement for traditional sugar. However, a recent study published in the European Heart Journal found that consuming high levels of xylitol, a popular sugar substitute often used in candy, sugar-free gum, mints, syrup, condiments, and even toothpaste, has been linked to cardiovascular risks. To conduct the study, researchers tested the impacts of xylitol on over 3,000 people in the U.S. and Europe.

Unregulated and unlicensed skincare providers and products carry unique risks for Black and brown skin
Unregulated and unlicensed beauty practices and products, as well as their consequences, are on the rise. In April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched an investigation into three HIV cases linked to microneedling received at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico. A month later, the CDC launched another investigation, this time into counterfeit Botox, after 15 different people in nine different states reported “harmful reactions.”

Corey Harris, the Michigan man who was caught on camera driving on a suspended license, shouldn’t be in jail

On ‘Masters of the Game,’ Lenny Kravitz explains what he really wants from Black media: ‘I’d like to be at the table’
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Last year, Lenny Kravitz criticized Black award shows, and I was so here for it. I totally agreed. In late 2023, he told Esquire, “To this day, I have not been invited to a BET thing or a Source Awards thing. Here is a Black artist who has reintroduced many Black art forms, who has broken down barriers — just like those that came before me broke down. That is positive. And they don’t have anything to say about it?”

Gene Folkes had just been jettisoned as a contestant on “The Apprentice” and was commiserating with a crew member at a bar inside the lobby of Trump Tower. He was indignant — and not just at having been kicked off the reality show after its star, Donald Trump, had delivered his catchphrase: “You’re fired.”
