I still remember where I was on May 17, 1954 when I first heard that the U.S. Supreme Court had handed down the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas decision. Walking home from segregated Lincoln High School in Sumter, South Carolina, I rejoiced with my schoolmates that the Supreme Court had acknowledged that “separate but equal” was “inherently unequal.”

It was daunting when the Rev. Brandon Thomas Crowley, at age 22, replaced a beloved pastor who had ministered to one of suburban Boston’s most famed Black churches for 24 years. It was more daunting — at times agonizing — to reach the decision six years later, in 2015,...

If Gary Owen is the example of white people being too comfortable, Shannon Sharpe is the Black people who let them
OPINION: Gary Owen’s recent appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” was a disappointing display of a Black man enabling a white culture vulture’s performance of “Blackness.”. Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read...

A Virginia school board voted to reinstate confederate names at two schools. I’ll bet even Robert E. Lee is confused.
Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. Years ago, I took my wife on her first road trip into the Deep South as we made the 11-hour trek from Washington, D.C., to Huntsville, Ala., to visit my parents. My wife, who is from Ghana and moved to New Jersey at age 11 before attending Howard University, had never been to the South before. Sure, she’d been to Miami, but I think we can all agree that Miami and anywhere in Alabama aren’t quite the same thing.

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. A very interesting TikTok came across my feed recently. It’d been viewed by over 11 million people when I got to it. (At last check it’s over 20 million.) In the video, you see a large, muscular, heavily tatted Black man wearing a necklace signifying that he may be a Mason. He’s sitting in his car wearing a wifebeater T-shirt. He says, “To the 7-year-old girl who had to watch me and my brothers jump her daddy after school, I’m sorry. I know that was probably a traumatizing experience for you.”
