Previewing the Jaguars' 2024 Season - Offense
The South Alabama roster was looking at major changes after the conclusion of the 2023 season. Not just because of the new reality of the transfer portal, but mostly because of the old-fashioned situation of graduation losses of upperclassmen. Nevertheless, there was a lot of optimism around the program as they moved into the offseason. After all, they were coming off of the most successful era ever in the short history of the program under Coach Kane Wommack: 22 wins over three seasons, the program's first winning season followed by its second and the 59-10 dismantling of Eastern Michigan in the 68 Ventures Bowl, the first postseason win for Jaguars. With a roster full of young, promising players and a coaching staff that was a mix of savvy veterans and up-and-comers adding some new blood at a couple of spots, continuing the run and rising to new heights looked very likely, until Wommack got a call from his old friend and fellow former Indiana assistant Kalen DeBoer with an offer to run the defense at storied Alabama. Fortunately the Jaguar staff already included the natural man for the suddenly vacant head coaching job: former star college player, assistant coach and head coach (Houston) Major Applewhite. Applewhite, Wommack's offensive coordinator, was the player"s choice to take over the program and he certainly offers the most likely path to continued success.
