Spokane's $3.1 Million Police Vehicle Funds Won't Expand its Electric Vehic Fleet

    2024-03-07

Last week, the Spokane City Council approved $3.128 million in federal grant funds for 46 new police department vehicles aimed at modernizing their aging fleet.

However, councilmember Michael Cathcart expressed concerns that this funding will not be used to expand the department's electric vehicle fleet. Cathcart believes that electric vehicles are not future-proofed and that technology is likely to change.

    Issues with Electric Vehicles

In 2021, the SPD acquired its first electric vehicle through a pilot program and later authorized $2.4 million for police vehicles, including eight electric vehicles. However, the SPD faced logistical challenges due to limitations in battery capacity and long charging times. As a result, the department's nine EVs are currently used only for administrative purposes.

    Logistical Challenges

One major issue is that electric vehicles, such as Teslas, were not designed for law enforcement use and require additional equipment, increasing the cost significantly. The department also faced challenges storing the vehicles during extreme weather conditions. Cathcart emphasized that electric vehicles are not suitable for patrol purposes.

    Future Plans

Despite efforts to replace aging gas-powered vehicles, there are no plans to further expand the SPD's EV fleet. SPD Public Safety Communication Manager Julie Humphreys mentioned that if a viable solution that fits the department's needs arises, they would be willing to explore it.

    What Are Your Thoughts?

What do you think about the challenges faced by the Spokane Police Department regarding its electric vehicle fleet? Do you believe electric vehicles are a viable option for law enforcement agencies?
