Washington's Catholic Prep School Settles $2.4 Million with Former Student Over Sex Abuse Claims

    2024-03-09

A private Catholic high school in Seattle has agreed to pay over $2.4 million to a former student who alleges she was groomed, harassed, and sexually abused by a teacher for an extended period.

The former student, who remains unidentified, also accuses administrators at Seattle Preparatory School of turning a blind eye to the abuse she endured during her four years at the school. She expressed the profound impact the abuse has had on her life and criticized the school's leadership for attempting to conceal the truth to protect their reputation.

    Allegations Against Jeff Pietz

The teacher at the center of the settlement, Jeff Pietz, also served as a coach and athletic director at the school from 1992 to 2006.

Reports from the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction reveal that Pietz had close personal relationships with multiple former students, engaging in inappropriate behaviors such as flirting, giving special attention, and taking students out for activities outside of school hours.

    Legal Action and School Response

Darrell Cochran, the lawyer representing the former student, anticipates more individuals coming forward with similar claims in the future.

Despite the allegations, Pietz was not disciplined by Seattle Prep in 2006 when concerns about his conduct were raised.

However, in 2023, after further investigations initiated by the OSPI, Pietz agreed to a 12-month suspension of his teaching license due to unprofessional conduct and lack of good moral character.

Ongoing Pattern of Abuse in Institutions

The case involving Pietz highlights a larger issue in institutions such as Seattle Prep, the Catholic Church, and the State, where sexual abuse is ignored and concealed, perpetuating a culture that enables further harm.

The trauma experienced by survivors when institutions fail to address abuse is compounded by what is known as "Institutional Betrayal," where the trust placed in an organization is shattered by its misconduct.

    What Are Your Thoughts?

    • What are your opinions on how institutions handle allegations of abuse within their structures?
    • Do you believe there should be stricter consequences for individuals accused of sexual abuse, especially in educational settings?
    • How can schools and organizations create safer environments for students and prevent future instances of abuse?
