Less than two months after Seattle implemented a controversial gig worker pay law, the city is already considering changes.

The law, which aimed to boost driver pay, resulted in unintended consequences that are now being addressed by city officials.

    Background of the Law

Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson is currently in talks with app-based delivery companies and their drivers to discuss modifications to the law.

When the law first took effect, companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash added a $5 fee to orders, causing disruptions to driver pay, restaurant orders, and customer expenses.

    Reactions and Predictions

Michael Wolfe, the Executive Director of driver advocacy group Drive Forward, expressed concerns about the law's impact on drivers.

While supportive of establishing a minimum earning standard, Wolfe believes the current law set wages too high, resulting in increased costs for customers.

Despite opposition from critics, companies like DoorDash defend the added fee as necessary to cover rising expenses.

    Future Changes to the Law

Looking ahead, Nelson and other city council members are exploring ways to "fix" the current law without completely repealing it.

Proposals for adjusting wages and maintaining a mileage component are being considered to address the issues caused by the initial implementation of the law.

The council is set to review potential changes on March 28, with a focus on finding a balanced solution that benefits both drivers and customers.
